For the 2019 Archibald Prize, artist @loribellespirovski has depicted musician Megan Washington ( @washingtongram ). ‘Seeing Megan perform on television when I was a teenager, she made an indelible impression on me; her sense of confidence, style, musicality and stage presence were captivating.
When I finally saw her live, these impressions were heightened. Ever since that time, I have wanted to paint her but it took five years for our calendars to sync. When we met at her home in Brisbane, I was bowled over by her down-to-earth nature and wicked sense of humour. However, it was her love for her baby Amos and dog Art that endeared me to her the most.
When Meg started singing to Amos, a totally improvised “baby commentary” on what was happening, I felt I was witness to an incredible moment of intimacy and depth that absolutely had to be captured in a painting.’ – Loribelle Spirovski
