Australia Week 2. The field assistants have arrived, days are falling into a rhythm, and the early season bird banding push has begun.
This is YYU. He’s midmolt from his drab winter plumage to the bright, bright blue male splendid fairy wrens are known for. Really he just looks like he’s been splattered in paint.
Splendid fairy wrens have been banded and studied at this site for longer than I’ve been alive. Variegateds have been studied here for over a decade. And in the coming weeks I’ll be banding four new species, looking at how all of them interact for my dissertation.
