Opa! Tudo bom, meninxs?
I’m Ben Brooks, and this week I’m taking over the account to show you some of my Fulbright experience in Brazil! I’m an English Teaching Assistant living in Porto Alegre, the country’s southernmost capital city, home to chimarrão, Grêmio, and the best Rupaul’s Drag Race themed bar in the world! Porto Alegre can be hard to describe. At varying times has reminded me of parts of Vancouver, suburban LA, and some historic waterfront areas of my hometown, Seattle, Washington. It’s a city where people work hard, live life, make art, and say, “bah.” I’m taking over this week to show you glimpses of my grant experience, from where I work, to the people and places across the city that I love and that make living here so ‘bacana!’ I graduated from DePaul University in Chicago with a degree in Italian. Being back on campus at a Catholic school, working with languages, I feel very much at home! The Pontifícia Universidade Católica de Rio Grande do Sul (PUC-RS) is hosting Fulbrighters for the first time this year, e estamos arrasando mesmo! My co-ETAs (Roger and Garrett, maravilhosos!) and I have one semester down, one to go. More on PUC-RS in tomorrow’s post!
Each day of this takeover, I’ll focus on a different theme central to my time in Porto Alegre. Também, I’ll try to answer to most common question I’m asked here: “why did you come to Brazil?” Vamos lá!
